To his Excellency William Tryon, Esquire, on the erection of
the palace at New Bern, 1770.
Patron of arts, of liberty and laws,
Whom virtue in her car triumphant draws,
For worth like thine these stately walls ascend,
Fair science rear'd them to her country's friend,
May future times thy bright example scan,
And as we love, those imitate, the man.
Regi pio felix, diris inimica tyrannis,
Virtuti has aedes libera terra dedit,
Sint Domus & Dominus seclis exempla futuris,
Hinc artes, mores, justitiamque colant.
